Thanks for joining Charming Diabetes for a Q&A! Please tell us a little more about yourselves, and your Type 1 Diabetes connection:
(if that connection is you, feel free to give us all the juicy details–how long have you had it? pump or injections? favorite way to treat a low?)
Erin: Hello, my name is Erin! I am 21 years old and currently studying nutrition in college. I have been type one diabetic for over 6 years. I was first diagnosed with diabetes in 2009 at the age of 14. I was on daily injections for about a year until I got the pump! Which is a GAME CHANGER. It gave me so much more freedom in everyday life! So in my kitchen I keep a stash of cereal and it is my absolute favorite way to treat a low!
Paige: Hey! My name is Paige and I am a Sports Massage Therapist. I am 22 years old. I love travelling, food, and family time! I met Erin in 2013. She has been my lovely girlfriend now for a little over 2 years. I moved to from New Jersey to Boston about a year and a half ago to be with her. It has been amazing! My connection to Type 1 is Erin. I see her deal with being Diabetic every single day and it is the bravest thing anyone can do. She doesn’t complain or wish she wasn’t Diabetic. She just lives life to the fullest and that is amazing to me.
Why did you start T Y P. 1 Apparel, and what do you hope to achieve?
We started T Y P. 1 Apparel because we want to bring hope and inspiration to Type 1 Diabetics. We want to start a movement for this disease, to get people to be active and live a healthy lifestyle. Erin runs a diabetic Instagram called @dontpassthe_sugah where she gives very healthy food recipes, inspiration, tips, and more! We have always wanted to have a business that could benefit others in a way that would get them on the path to a healthier lifestyle, because that is what we believe in.
What has been the most exciting part of starting this business so far?
Paige: I think the most exciting part has been seeing our ideas really come to life. It is truly amazing to start with this idea in your head, and you put everything into it and it truly becomes real. It’s amazing to look at the final product and say to yourself “I created this”.
Any advice for budding entrepreneurs out there in the Diabetic community?
Paige: Anything is possible if you work your hardest for it. Don’t half-ass anything, really go for it!
Is there anything in particular that you’re looking forward to as far as the future of Diabetes is concerned?
Erin: I am looking forward to the day they say “oh, you have diabetes? We have an app for that, haha” but seriously, the clinical trials for the bionic pancreas seem to be going well so I can’t wait for that to get the stamp of approval. I must say being on social media and spreading awareness about our disease, I’ve seen a lot of positivity and I’ve also seen a lot of negativity. Some people don’t have hope that this disease will be cured one day or the feel so badly about the disease they actually hate it. I love my life. Sure, diabetes makes things a little more complicated I have to go to a million doctors and focus on every little thing I eat but I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I never got it. This disease has taught me a lot about myself and I will always have hope, as everyone should. In the last decade, science has improved so much and diabetes research has improved so much that there’s no way they won’t find a cure or a way to make life even easier in the next 10 years.
